Community

The multi-cultural community of El Centro has a history rich in agriculture and is the core of the Imperial Valley’s retail district. El Centro, as its name implies, is the center of one of Southern California’s most promising new commercial and industrial areas. It is also the county seat for Imperial County and lies 50 feet below sea level.

The bustling City of El Centro is surrounded by thousands of acres of prime farmland that has transformed the desert into one of the most productive farming regions in California with an annual crop production of over $1 billion. Agriculture is the largest industry in Imperial County and accounts for 48% of all employment. Fifty percent of the jobs in the City of El Centro come from the service and retail sector. A recent growth in the interest of Imperial County as a Filming Location, has spurred growth in servicing this industry.

The City of El Centro was incorporated on April 6, 1908, and is operated by a council/manager form of government. The members of the City Council also sit as the Community Development Commission (Commission) and Redevelopment Agency (Agency) governing boards. The City Manager is empowered as the Executive Director of the Commission and Agency.

Location

El Centro is situated in the southern most part of California. It is located 128 miles east of San Diego, 60 miles west of Yuma, Arizona and just 10 miles north of Mexicali, Mexico. It is accessible via Interstate 8, State Highway 86 and State Highway 111.

Education

El Centro has three school districts within its boundary. McCabe Union Elementary School District provides k - 8 education to children outside the city limits. El Centro School District offers a comprehensive educational program for approximately 6,350 students at nine elementary schools, one middle school and one junior high school. The district provides a variety of educational programs suitable to the needs of a nult-ethnic and varied socio-economic community. The District is governed by a five member board of education and employs approximately 360 certified and 345 classified staff.

The Central Union High School District includes two four-year comprehensive high schools and one alternative education school. The 3,450 students have access to a wide range of curricula offerings that conform to state guidelines, model curriculum and the University of California requirements. The District is supported by more than 350 certified and classified staff. The District is governed by a five member Board of Trustees.

Opportunities to attend college are available through Imperial Valley College, and San Diego State University, Calexico Campus. El Centro also has many vocational training programs as well.

Resources

El Centro offers an abundant supply of every resource necessary for the success of business. There is a labor pool of more than 10,000 trainable workers in Imperial County and we have affordably priced, well located industrial and commercial sites available. Health Care

El Centro is home to the El Centro Regional Medical Center. A 107 bed hospital with a staff over 100 capable physicians and surgeons representing more than 30 specialties. The medical center, through community involvement.
